"Fernando Alonso one of the best drivers I’ve ever seen" - Michael Andretti

Andretti Autosport boss Michael Andretti has described Fernando Alonso as one of the best drivers he has ever worked with.

The two-time Formula 1 world champion made his IndyCar début earlier this year at the Indianapolis 500 with Andretti, qualifying fifth and leading 27 laps before engine failure ended his day early.

Despite failing to make the finish, Andretti was left impressed with the impact Alonso made during his brief spell in America.

"It was huge and it was all positive," said Andretti. "There’s not one negative about it."

"Having him on the team was a great pleasure, it was an honour to have him drive for us and I’ve got to say we had a lot of fun doing it," he added. "He was great to be around, he’s one of the best drivers I’ve ever, ever seen and worked with. I was very impressed with his whole approach and it was a blast. It was a very positive effect on the team."

Alonso's drive in the Indy 500 came as part of a partnership between Andretti Autosport and McLaren, and while Alonso has admitted he won't be returning to the race next year, Andretti and McLaren are in talks to renew their partnership in the future.

"We’re talking," Andretti confirmed. "I think we’re just waiting for the dust to settle and getting everything in order in Europe, in the Formula 1 and then hopefully we can talk about still doing something."

"I think there’s interest there, how and when and where I don’t know but I think there’s still a good possibility we could do something together."
